Reverend Doctor Harriet G. McCombs is a minister, teacher, spiritual director and compassionate advocate for psychological and spiritual wellness. Her affiliation with the African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church is longstanding. She has served the AME Church is a variety of capacities including as a pastor in South Carolina; and associate minister with dynamic leaders at Metropolitan, Payne Memorial, St. John and Empowerment Temple. She has served on the Journal of Christian Education; Baltimore Annual Conference Board of Examiners and currently serves on the AME Church’s Health Commission as the Mental Health Commissioner. She has preached and conducted workshops throughout the United States and several countries including Kenya, Uganda, Japan and China; and traveled to support the growth of the AME church in India and Brazil. She is the author of Take a Break or Be Broken: Comfort for the Caregiver.
Dr. McCombs has had a distinguished academic career. She studied at Columbia International University, Seminary & Graduate School of Missions and the Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary in South Carolina; earned a Ph.D. from the University of Nebraska; and served on the faculties of some of the nation’s most notable universities. Dr. McCombs holds a graduate certificate in Global Mental Health and has actively responded to international and national traumatic events.
Dr. McCombs’ career as a senior public health advisor is underscored with numerous professional awards. She is a recent retiree from the U. S. Department of Health and Human Services. Her work was instrumental in leading the nation’s efforts to integrate mental health services with primary health care services.
Currently, Rev. McCombs serves as the pastor Chestnut Grove AME Church in Harford County, Maryland where she is developing strong disciples and spiritual leaders. Her driving passion is for all to come to know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit.
